Is your product or service Authentic?

One of the common themes at South by Southwest’s Interactive 2008 what authenticity. This term was used in the context of the user experience, messaging, and design. When I would look around the room after this word was used, it was obvious that the message resonated because there were so many smiles and [...]

You are F***ed — if you’re in business for profit.

My family lost its matriarch last week.  As a result, our family was drawn together to celebrate her life.  This celebration gave me the rare opportunity to learn a bit more about my grandfather, the husband of my departed grandmother.  They had been married 65 years and together, they had taken the family’s sustenance farm [...]

Just In Time Innovation: Are you agile enough?

Merriam Webster defines innovation as: Function: noun Pronunciation: \ˌi-nə-vā-shən\ 1. the introduction of something new Wikipedia adds some additional thoughts in this matter: the change must increase value, customer value, or producer value. Innovations are intended to make someone better off, and the succession of many innovations grows the whole economy. There is [...]

Don’t strive for satisfaction - Seek out the extremes!

I am so sick of companies and marketeers focused on achieving customer satisfaction! This is absolutely the wrong focus: this is the pursuit of mediocrity. mediocrity - WordNet® noun 1. ordinariness as a consequence of being average and not outstanding [syn: averageness] 2. a person of second-rate ability or value; “a team of aging second-raters”; “shone [...]

It’s easy to miss what you’re not looking for!

As usual, Seth Godin posts another great one. I highly encourage you to check out Before you buy your next ad… I won’t post the obvious spoiler here, but the point is incredibly valid. On this topic, I would highly recommend picking Noise by Bart Kosko. The essence of the story is this: [...]

Yes! Seems we do very similar things - I'm the Product Manager at Passenger (thinkpassenger.com), and we provide a Software as Service solution for companies looking to reach out to their customers and engage them in conversations. I also spent 4 years working on the BBC's citizen journalism/activist site, Action Network, where I learnt a lot about challenges associated with user driven innovation in a very different context. A lot of crossover in terms of motivation/participation, though, and I'd be glad to 'cross polinate' with you.

Bryon, finally had a chance to check out your Whisper Labs offering. Sounds good, is there a place to demo it or try it out? I'd love to hear more about it.

Hey Byron, thanks for your note. I'm still not all the way through Outside Innovation (am a busy reader!) but I really like what I've seen already. It's fascinating as a compendium of compelling case studies, but leaves me wanting more word from the people involved. I get the 'story' but want to know more about the internal politics involved for the organizations discussed - the battles they fought to get internal support for customer collaboration, the challenges raised, etc. Though I totally understand that those conversations are usually not shared with the general population, and the purpose of the book is to sell open source innovation, not provide a deep and unbiased insight into it.

I will definitely add Open Genius to my list. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

Thanks for the comment back. I think I get the general gist of what you're saying. If you have any suggestions for case studies, or if you have the quantitative stuff that you mentioned, please let me know.

I am interested in the kind of work that you do. I'd like to get more info that I could pass along to students to give them an idea of what kind of work is going on with WOM in relation to traditional marketing research.

What do you think students need to know about WOM and research for product innovation?

Hi Byron! Thanks for commenting on my forum discussion. Your answer directly addressed what I was going for! I like to ask challenging questions, because that's the best way for me to learn, and I hope that you and I can keep up a dialogue. I'm happy to meet you.

Byron, you're speaking my language! I conduct primary customer and prospect research for my clients (on a grassroots level as opposed to online). I'll be checking out your website and am intrigued to know how I might be able to utilize Whisperlabs in my client strategies.

Thanks and I'll be in touch!
Sincerely,
Tara
